Cardiff University has, in our unbiased opinion, a very strong program in ecological and evolutionary genetics. This is where we study otters, pandas, polar bears, sheep, earthworms and many other fascinating species. That said, many UK universities offer a genetics component in the biology curriculum. Best if you look at their webpages to see what they offer. Also go to their Open Days if you can. 🙂

The best universities are those where teaching and research go hand-in-hand. You can access many open resources on the Internet and, in particular, Google Scholar. Have a look at the topics that interest you to see which university researchers have published papers about topics you’re interested in to see who might be lecturing you and what their interests are. However, you might also follow the path of serendipity because it is quite likely that your interests will change as you study and you should be careful not to rule out finding that you’re interested in something quite different!

It really depends on your specific interest: it is probably best to select your university based on the programmes they offer and how they match what you’re most interested in.

The University of Southampton, where I work, offers undergraduate programmes in Biology, Zoology and Ecology that include a strong genetics component. You can always choose to specialise in this field through selecting mainly genetics modules in your last year and doing a genetic lab project for your final year project.
