A glow-worm larva feeds on snails and slugs, so it likes damp, shaded habitat like bramble patches where it can find plenty of prey. But when it becomes an adult it needs a much more open habitat where the female’s glow can be seen at a distance and the male can fly in search of females without crashing into things. So the best glow-worm sites normally have a combination of open and shaded areas. Places like churchyards, the edges of woods and scrub are often good, but they have to have been there for a long time because glow-worms are very bad at colonizing new sites.
