The colour and pattern of spots/stripes or ‘pelage’ of a Scottish Wildcat are one of its most distinguishing features and until genetic testing became available this was the only way of identifying a cat as a Scottish Wildcat. Although there is some variation in the light parts of their coat the dark stripes are what is mainly used to identify them. Have a look at this link to see how they vary:
