Female glow-worms hardly move at all as adults but males can fly at about the same speed as a human can walk, so the females wait for males to come to them. A glow-worm larva takes about five minutes to walk a metre and in the spring they go off in search of somewhere to pupate and turn into an adult. Even a puddle or a busy road can be a real obstacle.
