      There is not an easy answer, they are mustelids and the oldest mustelid fossils are at least 23 million years old but there is debate over which fossils are likely to be ancestral forms of mustelids and which are representative of the first modern mustelids. In terms of relatedness to other modern species, DNA technology is improving the understanding of this all the time.
